Hat Rock State Park
East of Umatilla, OR
The Corps passes "a rock...resembling a hat" on a day that includes running rapids where today's McNary Dam sits. Camp was on an island, perhaps Blalock Island between Irrigon and Boardman. About 100 Umatilla Indians crossed the river to visit, so Privates Pierre Cruzatte and George GiBson take turns playing the fiddle for singing and dancing--much to the Umatillas' delight.
