The Winston-Salem Warthogs, a Single A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, play at Ernie Shore Field. It is named after Ernie Shore, a major league pitcher for Boston and New York Yankees and later the sheriff of Forsyth County who worked to get funding for a new stadium when the stadium burned in 1955. Ernie Shore Field opened in 1956 and received a major renovation in 1998. This is a nice stadium with good seating areas and concession area. The main concession area is separate from the seating area behind the third base seating. There are several different windows, each having its own specialties. There is a small merry-go-round down the first base line. Tonight there were two little league teams that got to go on the field with the Warthog players for the National Anthem. One team was the Pirates from the SW Forsyth Little League, ages 7 & 8, sponsored by Golden Farms Foods. The second team was the Braves from the Winston-Salem National Little League, ages 9-12, sponsored by Pat's Body Shop. The Warthogs were playing the Lynchburg HillCats. Thanks to 4 errors made by the Hillcats and superb pitching by Byeong An, the Warthogs were successful and won 5-2. The box score was Hillcats R-2, H-7, E-4 and Warhogs R-5, H-10, E-0. The field lines are RF-325', CF-400', and LF-325'. This is National Law Enforcement Week, so the ceremonial first pitches were thrown out by various law enforcement officials from the area. A police officer played the National Anthem and God Bless America during an inning break on a trumpet. Police officers presented the colors. The mascot is Wally the Warthog. McGruff was at the game for National Law Enforcement Week and came on the field with Wally in a police car. New Name and Logo in 2009. 2014 current name BB&T Ballpark seating 5,500.
